speaking of shipping - flying with wine

Since the TSA is making our air travel extra safe by forcing Grandma take her shoes off while sitting on the floor and preventing a business traveler from having more than 4 ounces of Selson Blue, we wine and spirit consumers are prevented from bringing alcohol into the cabin of the aircraft.

So how does a person travel with wine? I'm going to a wedding in September and wanted to bring some wine so I can 1) give the gift of the good stuff and 2) make it through the week (the location is in a place where the alcohol selection amounts to Miller Lite in a can and maybe a dusty bottle of Jack in the corner).

Now it looks as though I'm going to have to ship it ahead of me since I can't bring it on the plane...only I can't ship it myself because that's against the law. Who makes these laws anyway? (rhetorical question)

My question is this: has anyone shipped wine in the baggage hold? I'm not talking about a half bottle of merlot wrapped in t-shirts in the suitcase. I mean a case. Packed in those styrofoam containers used for wine shipping? And how about temperature? Temperature can vary wildly in baggage holds right? So would that ruin the wine? Or does the styrofoam protect against some of the temperature extremes?

we finally decided to arrange through a winery for them to ship it as a new purchase. More expensive that way, and we are limited to one particular winery's selection, but it seems to be the only way we can do it.
I do know that overseas companies who sell Absinthe (not allowed to be imported into the US) call their product "specialty glass bottles" and ship it that way. There is always the disclaimer that if customs figures out what it is, and destroys/detains it, then they are not responsible.

    Good luck!
