Anyway, can any of you suggest places to stay that are under, say, $100/night in and around Napa or Sonoma? I'm looking to go again in April for my birthday, this time taking the boyfriend, so i'm looking for comfort and affordability. I've been there many times, he's never been. Not looking for a pool or any kind of free "breakfast." i just want something quiet, cozy and cheap & clean. And, no not Harbin ( although that's quite lovely).
Also, for you semi-locals, are there any cool hikes in the area?

So how does a person travel with wine? I'm going to a wedding in September and wanted to bring some wine so I can 1) give the gift of the good stuff and 2) make it through the week (the location is in a place where the alcohol selection amounts to Miller Lite in a can and maybe a dusty bottle of Jack in the corner).

Now it looks as though I'm going to have to ship it ahead of me since I can't bring it on the plane...only I can't ship it myself because that's against the law. Who makes these laws anyway? (rhetorical question)

My question is this: has anyone shipped wine in the baggage hold? I'm not talking about a half bottle of merlot wrapped in t-shirts in the suitcase. I mean a case. Packed in those styrofoam containers used for wine shipping? And how about temperature? Temperature can vary wildly in baggage holds right? So would that ruin the wine? Or does the styrofoam protect against some of the temperature extremes?

FAVORITE WINES – FAVORITE RESTAURANTS…

I am constantly being asked to name my favorite wine, my favorite restaurant. For me, that is akin to trying to name my best friend, favorite piece of music, film or classic novel. The answer depends on the hour, the season of the year, my mood, and the company.

I have learned almost all I know about wines from my wonderful French father-in-law (former) when living in what was then French Morocco. Often I tell friends I was sure he didn’t care if I developed American heart trouble, but wanted to be sure when I left Morocco it would be with a French liver!

Sure, sure, I also learned much more while living in France for six years by tasting, tasting, and more tasting in the wine regions and restaurants. I enjoy wine lists, keep track of average prices and favorite food and wine combinations, and I’m always eager to sample a wine that’s new or unfamiliar to me, when someone else pays for it.

Prices for the same wines very, sometimes drastically from restaurant to restaurant; some have large, long standing cellars, others small. I love wine, consider it an essential part of a good meal, and probably tend to spend slightly more than the average diner on a good bottle. When ordering from a wine list, I follow one simple rule: I rarely pay more than $25. a bottle. My general rule of thumb is that one-third of the final bill should be for wine. That is – if you are paying say $40 a meal for two, another $20 should be spent on wine.

Outside of selecting a wine for it’s ability to marry with a certain dish – which I’ll get to later, the most important consideration is “classification of a wine.” I classify all wines by “volume of alcohol” as indicated on the label of a cork-finished wine. This classification is special, of my own making, with two categories, “lovers wine,” and “sleepers wine.” Wines that fall within the range of 11 ½ to 12 ½ by volume are for lovers – need I say more! Other table wines of power, high extraction, high alcohol and more oak than a wine’s fruit can handle, do make me sleepy. These wines of 12 ½ to 13 ½ by volume take away the appreciation of the difference of the human species, good intelligent conversation and harm the refined palate.
Wines that are 14 degrees by volume or higher, I shy completely away from. Wines of this strength can be only enjoyed as an aperitif – like a Port wine, to stimulate the appetite before a pleasurable meal. Wines of 11 ½ to 12 ½ are smoother, lighter and elegant – especially suited to complete the marriage of wine and food at the dinning table. Take your pick, one wine type or another, while realizing my opinions are subjective, or this is only a bedtime story. Bedtime? It couldn’t be the wine! Must be my age!

When dining out, I often go on seasonal “binges,” eating asparagus, melon, fresh ousters when available or game. If I see melon on the menu in January, or scallops during July, I say no. I search for baby peas, baby carrots, smallest potatoes or other like ingredients that’s fresh – really fresh pleases the most. Seldom do I consider steak, figuring it taste better at home. The marriage of wine with food is the passion!

Common sense dictates young dishes as squab – veal want young wines, wines less than five years old. Always I return to the gourmet table – young food, young wine – heavy food, full-bodied wines. There are time-honored rules about wine and food, which balance each other, but we have reached an age, in a wine producing country where individuality and informality are gaining over the conventional. We are as a mixture of races, more adventurous about eating and drinking as never before. Rules about wine are really quite simple if applied with common sense. A white before a red – a light wine before a full - bodied – a dry wine before a sweet one and a young one before and old wine.

Take the time to learn about a restaurant and its specialties. Every restaurant should have at least one or two dishes of which it is particularly proud. These dishes, will usually be a good buy, and generally fresh. One such restaurant, and one which is admired far and wide with a devout following of gourmets, is “Bilig French Café” of Auburn. This French chef I often see on Saturday mornings at the Farmers Market, selecting young fresh items for his restaurant. With devotion like this – you know why this restaurant is so authentically – French, and rated four stars among food and wine critics.

When dining out I always make a reservation and always arrive hungry, for that’s one of the best compliments one can pay a chef. What do I look for? Final judgment rests on the quality of ingredients – chef’s creativity and overall service -- its wine list “value” and variety are essential. A good restaurant is like a good theater: One leaves in a good frame of mind, physically and psychologically satisfied, with a feeling that time and money have been well spent.

I just moved into a new house, and want to turn a hallway linen closet into a wine cellar. I don't want to do anything too fancy with cooling systems because the closet lies in the center of the house, away from all heat sources and outside light. I just want some insulation on the walls and a rack from floor to ceiling.
Anybody have any experience with this sort of thing, or nknow of any websites that can offer guidance or plans? All research I've tried to do on the internet has led only to contractors who will come in and do it for me... and hand me an enormous bill when their done.

I brought a couple of bottles of Kook Soon Dang's Bek Se Ju - a rice wine with ginseng and other spices - back from Korea, as I was rather charmed by its extremely spicy floral notes and failure to give me a nasty headache, which grape-derived white wines do. Also, it's the only wine I've ever had that goes well with sashimi.

A special occasion has finally arrived, so my Bek Se Ju will soon be drunk up, and I was wondering where I might find more. I figure with the large Asian populace it's GOT to be here somewhere. In my area everything's Thai, Vietnamese or Cambodian and they've drawn a blank. Ranch 99, perhaps? Anyone have Korean markets in their neighborhood? Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

I read about it in some magazine article because it was mentioned this is the stuff that just misses the cutoff to be the $250 a bottle stuff. I picked it up for $15 at Cost Plus World Market, but now they don't appear to be restocking it...if I'd known it was gonna be as good as it was, I'd have bought a case.

Here it is:
